Johannesburg’s festive season will welcome a timeless classical ballet as the Youth Russian Ballet Company partners with Roodepoort Theatre for four performances of The Nutcracker on 5 and 6 December 2026.
As the festive season approaches, audiences are invited to step into a world of imagination, enchanting music and extraordinary dance when The Nutcracker takes centre stage at Roodepoort Theatre this December. Presented by the Youth Russian Ballet Company (YRBC) in partnership with Roodepoort Theatre, the celebrated ballet promises a memorable theatrical experience for families, ballet enthusiasts and audiences of all ages.
Set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless score, The Nutcracker transports audiences into a magical world where a festive celebration gives way to an extraordinary adventure. At the heart of the story is the thrilling battle between the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King, leading audiences towards the enchanting Land of Sweets.
Among the production’s most recognisable highlights are the graceful Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the captivating Waltz of the Flowers. These celebrated musical and dance sequences have helped establish The Nutcracker as one of the most enduring traditions of the festive season, bringing generations of audiences together through the universal language of music and movement.

Young talent takes centre stage
Beyond the magic of the story, the production places a spotlight on the discipline, artistry and dedication of Johannesburg’s young ballet dancers. The Youth Russian Ballet Company brings together talented performers trained in the Vaganova method, a classical ballet training tradition that emphasises technical precision, expressive movement and artistic development.
Their participation highlights the importance of developing young talent and creating opportunities for emerging performers to present their skills on established stages. Productions of this nature also help introduce new audiences to classical ballet, demonstrating how the performing arts can remain relevant, accessible and inspiring across generations.
For families considering a festive outing, the production offers an opportunity to experience live theatre together while introducing younger audiences to the beauty of classical dance. For established ballet lovers, it provides an opportunity to revisit a much-loved work through the performances of Johannesburg’s emerging generation of dancers.
The production also marks a new partnership between the Youth Russian Ballet Company and Roodepoort Theatre, bringing together the company’s dance talent and creative production with the venue’s stage and audience reach.
The collaboration reflects the value of partnerships within the performing arts, where companies and cultural venues can work together to present productions that enrich audiences and contribute to the continued visibility of the arts in Johannesburg.
The season carries particular significance through the longstanding connection between Roodepoort Theatre and Yana Auger, Director of the Russian School of Ballet and a driving force behind the Youth Russian Ballet Company.
Auger was recognised as a Star Recipient on the Stars of Roodepoort Walk of Fame, unveiled during the theatre’s 45th-anniversary celebrations on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025. Born in Russia and trained in the Vaganova method, she has taught ballet in Johannesburg since 2008 and holds a teaching qualification from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. With more than 25 years of teaching experience, her contribution reflects a sustained commitment to ballet education and the development of young dancers.
Her recognition adds another layer of significance to this production, reinforcing the relationship between ballet education, artistic excellence and the institutions that provide platforms for performance.

Audiences attending The Nutcracker will also have the opportunity to experience Roodepoort Theatre following its significant refurbishment. The improvements include a newly designed entrance, a refreshed waiting area, a Walk of Fame celebrating artists who have graced the stage, and brand-new seating in the Main Theatre.
Unveiled during the venue’s 45th-anniversary celebrations in September 2025, the refurbishment represents another chapter in the theatre’s history as an important performing arts destination in Johannesburg West.
As a performing arts venue under Joburg City Theatres, an entity of the City of Johannesburg, Roodepoort Theatre continues to provide a space where audiences can engage with live performance and celebrate the creative talent that contributes to the city’s cultural landscape.
With its combination of classical music, storytelling, technical artistry and festive atmosphere, The Nutcracker presents an opportunity for audiences to make live theatre part of their December celebrations.
