From cabin crew training to the cockpit, Jabulani Mthembu is building his aviation career one milestone at a time, proving that determination, continuous learning and patience are essential ingredients for pursuing a dream.
For many aspiring pilots, the dream of flying an aircraft begins with looking up at the sky and imagining what it would be like to take control of a plane. For Jabulani Mthembu, however, turning that dream into reality has required years of commitment, technical learning and practical training. Since beginning his aviation journey in 2013, Mthembu has steadily worked towards his goal of becoming a fully qualified commercial pilot.
His story is one of persistence and professional growth, demonstrating that a career in aviation is not achieved overnight. Instead, it is built through a series of important milestones, each bringing an aspiring aviation professional closer to the cockpit.

Mthembu’s introduction to the industry came in 2013 when he completed his Cabin Crew Licence through Pebble Blue Academy. This experience provided him with an initial understanding of the aviation environment and strengthened his passion for an industry where safety, discipline and professionalism are essential.
Rather than stopping at his first qualification, Mthembu continued to build the academic foundation needed to pursue opportunities in flight training. In 2015 and 2016, he completed Mathematics N3 and Engineering Science N3 at Ekurhuleni West College. These studies were undertaken to prepare for aviation cadet opportunities while strengthening his understanding of mathematical and technical concepts relevant to his ambitions.
A significant milestone followed in 2017, when Mthembu successfully completed his Private Pilot Licence (PPL), marking an important step towards his professional pilot aspirations. The achievement represented progress beyond the classroom and into the practical world of flight training.
His development continued throughout 2018 and 2019, when he obtained his Night Rating and dedicated time to building his flying hours. These experiences formed part of his ongoing preparation for more advanced pilot qualifications and the demands of operating aircraft in different conditions.
Mthembu also expanded his expertise beyond conventional piloting. In 2020 and 2021, he obtained his drone licence through Drone-IT, broadening his exposure to the growing field of unmanned aviation. During this period, he also gained industry exposure and operational experience through work with aviation-related organisations, including NOTAM and ISARAIL SA.
This combination of training and experience reflects an aviation journey that extends beyond a single qualification. It highlights the importance of remaining adaptable, developing technical knowledge and exploring different areas of an evolving industry.

In 2024, Mthembu successfully completed his Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theoretical examinations. He followed this achievement in 2025 by successfully completing his Instrument Rating examinations, taking another important step towards his goal.
Now, in 2026, he has officially commenced his Commercial Pilot Licence and Instrument Rating flight training. This stage brings together the knowledge he has accumulated over the years with the practical skills required for the next phase of his aviation career.
For Mthembu, every qualification represents more than a certificate. It is evidence of the time, effort and commitment invested in pursuing a demanding career path. His progress also illustrates the value of continuous professional development in an industry where knowledge, precision and safety remain central to every operation.
Sharing his progress, Mthembu sums up his journey with an upbeat milestone: “3 Licenses Done and 2 More to Go.” The statement captures both his excitement about how far he has come and his determination to complete the remaining stages of his training.
His journey offers an encouraging message to young people who aspire to enter aviation but may feel overwhelmed by the qualifications, costs, technical requirements and time involved. While every person’s path will be different, Mthembu’s experience demonstrates the importance of taking deliberate steps, investing in education and remaining committed to long-term goals.

Aviation offers opportunities across several fields, including piloting, cabin crew services, aircraft maintenance, drone operations and other specialised technical and operational roles. Exploring these pathways can help aspiring professionals identify opportunities that match their interests, abilities and circumstances.
As Mthembu continues his commercial pilot and instrument rating flight training, his story remains a work in progress. The next chapter will be shaped by further practical experience, continued learning and the completion of the remaining requirements on his path towards becoming a commercial pilot.
For now, his message is simple: progress deserves to be celebrated, but the journey does not end there. Three licences down, two more to go and a dream that continues to move closer to reality.
At Imbizo Magazine, we celebrate individuals whose journeys reflect determination, ambition and the pursuit of excellence. Jabulani Mthembu’s aviation story reminds us that sometimes the biggest achievements begin with the courage to take the first step and the discipline to keep going.
