When Nokuthula Fundama steps onto an international stage, she does not arrive alone. She carries language, rhythm, memory, and the spiritual weight of South African heritage. In October, that presence was felt far beyond home soil as the Nokuthula Fundama Band performed at the Espace Miramar Theatre in Cannes and the iconic Martinez Hotel in France, marking a powerful moment for South African music on a global platform.
A vocalist, songwriter, composer, poet, and recorded artist, Fundama’s artistry is layered and intentional. Each creative role feeds into the other, allowing her to shape not only melodies, but narratives that speak to identity, history, and emotional truth. “I am able to write the lyrics, compose the melody, shape the narrative, perform and record the music,” she explains. “These roles complement each other.”
At the heart of Fundama’s music lies a deep commitment to authenticity. Her compositions are anchored in South African rhythmic traditions and carried through the power of her mother tongue, a choice that preserves cultural depth while inviting global audiences into her world. Even when language barriers exist, the emotion remains universal.
Poetry plays a crucial role in this process. It guides her word choices, her phrasing, and the way emotion is released through her voice. This poetic sensibility gives her music an intimate quality—songs feel lived-in, reflective, and spiritually grounded.
