Soweto Theatre Hosts the Gibson Kente Annual Lecture: Honouring the Father of Black Theatre

Soweto Theatre once again becomes a sacred meeting ground for memory, resistance, and imagination as it hosts the Gibson Kente Annual Lecture — a powerful tribute to the life and enduring legacy of Gibson Kente, the visionary playwright, composer, director, and cultural activist widely celebrated as the Father of Black Theatre in South Africa.

This year’s lecture, curated by James Ngcobo and Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, is themed “The Legacy and Efficacy of Gibson Kente as a Black Playwright in South African Theatre.” The programme invites audiences to reflect deeply on Kente’s radical contribution to theatre — not merely as entertainment, but as a weapon of truth, healing, and political consciousness during some of South Africa’s most turbulent years.

Gibson Kente’s work revolutionised township theatre. Through bold storytelling, infectious music, sharp humour, and unapologetically Black narratives, he confronted apartheid, social injustice, and moral decay while centring the lived experiences of ordinary people. His plays did more than fill community halls — they educated, mobilised, and restored dignity to Black audiences who rarely saw themselves reflected with honesty and pride on mainstream stages.

The Annual Gibson Kente Lecture goes beyond remembrance. It positions Kente as a living influence whose methods, courage, and artistic philosophy continue to shape contemporary South African theatre. In revisiting his legacy, the lecture challenges today’s creatives to ask difficult questions: How do we use art as a tool for resistance now? How do we tell stories that remain accountable to community, truth, and liberation?

Hosted at Soweto Theatre — itself a symbol of cultural resilience — the lecture is both a celebration and a call to action. It urges artists, scholars, students, and cultural workers to carry forward Kente’s fearless spirit and reimagine Black theatre as a space of power, memory, and possibility.

As South Africa continues to grapple with questions of identity, justice, and creative freedom, the Gibson Kente Annual Lecture stands as a timely reminder: some legacies do not fade — they demand to be lived.
