Ekurhuleni’s creative soul has always burned bright, in its dusty streets where dancers rehearse barefoot, in garages turned into makeshift studios, and in the voices of musicians who turn struggle into song. Yet, for too long, the heartbeat of this city’s creativity has gone unheard.
Artists across the city have carried their dreams like unshaken faith, waiting for opportunities that never arrive, knocking on doors that remain tightly shut. Many have lost hope, surviving on passion alone while watching others thrive in a system that seems to overlook them. But now, a spark of possibility is in the air.
On Friday, 17 October 2025, the Cultural Creative Industry, Gauteng SACR and city of Ekurhuleni will host what many are calling a turning point, the Ekurhuleni Creative and Cultural Indaba 2025, set to take place at the DMT under the theme “Reimagining and Resourcing the Creative Ekurhuleni.”
This Indaba isn’t just another formal gathering filled with speeches and handshakes. It’s being framed as a rallying call to every artist, creative entrepreneur, and dreamer who believes that Ekurhuleni’s creative energy deserves recognition, resources, and respect.
For years, artists have asked one thing: to be seen, to be supported, to be included. Now, the Indaba promises to bring together the city’s artists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders to discuss how to rebuild and sustain Ekurhuleni’s cultural economy. From music and film to design and publishing, every creative voice will have a place at the table.
The day’s sessions will dive deep into what truly matters to the creative community:
– Film, TV & Animation – empowering filmmakers to tell stories that travel beyond township borders.
– Live Performance & Festivals – reviving stages that once echoed with hope and song.
– Creative Business & Design – turning artistic passion into sustainable livelihoods.
– Arts Education & Publishing – preserving culture through words and wisdom.
Unlike past events that ended with applause but no action, these sessions are said to focus on solutions, strategies that will be reported back in a plenary session for real commitments and funding plans. If this holds true, the Indaba could mark the moment Ekurhuleni artists have long been waiting for.
In a touching moment, the Indaba will also honour JV Tabudi, a beloved regional icon who left behind an indelible mark on the city’s creative landscape. His legacy will be celebrated through the unveiling of a commissioned portrait, a reminder that greatness has always lived in Ekurhuleni, even when recognition didn’t.
The day will unfold with a vibrant Exhibition Hall, Live Art Installations, and a Creative Showcase & Networking Reception featuring performances from local artists. It’s more than an event, it’s a celebration of creative resilience, unity, and possibility.
Ekurhuleni’s creative community has been here before, inspired by big promises that fade with time. Many still ask:
– Will this Indaba finally bring real funding for emerging artists?
– Will young creatives get access to spaces, equipment, and mentorship?
– Will it end the cycle of exclusion and gatekeeping that has drained hope from so many talented individuals?
Because for many, the struggle isn’t just about money, it’s about dignity, representation, and belonging in a city that often forgets the power of its own people. Ekurhuleni doesn’t lack talent. It lacks opportunity. And unless this Indaba transforms good intentions into measurable change, the pain of exclusion will continue to silence the very voices that make this city extraordinary.
As Ekurhuleni gears up for this landmark Indaba, one question lingers in the air like an unfinished song. Will this gathering truly reimagine the future, or will it be another moment that fades without resourcing the artists who keep this city alive?
For Ekurhuleni’s creatives, the answer will determine more than the success of an event. It will define the future of an entire artistic generation.
