The Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) has officially opened its Special Projects Funding Call for 2025–2026, inviting filmmakers, producers, and creative entrepreneurs across Gauteng to turn their cinematic dreams into reality. As one of the most vibrant creative hubs in Africa, Gauteng continues to power the local film industry and the GFC is once again stepping up to nurture talent, create jobs, and spotlight local stories through its comprehensive funding support.

A Funding Call with Impact

The Special Projects funding programme is designed to boost socio-economic development while strengthening Gauteng’s position as a powerhouse for film and television. Through this initiative, the GFC aims to:

  • Support skills development and training in the creative sector.
  • Encourage job creation and economic empowerment.
  • Promote audience growth and expand access to local content.

Applications are open across Gauteng’s five development corridors—Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, West Rand, and Johannesburg—ensuring a fair and inclusive spread of opportunities

 Funding Opportunities for Every Level of Filmmaker

Whether you’re an emerging director with your first short film or a seasoned producer working on a television series, the GFC has funding categories designed to fit your creative journey.

🎞️ Production Funding

  • Content for Television – up to R250,000 (Tiers 1 & 2)
  • Cultural Heritage & Tourism Content – up to R350,000
  • Emerging Filmmakers – up to R130,000
  • Digital Content (Web Series/Vodcasts) – up to R100,000
  • Documentaries & Short Films – up to R130,000
  • Animation – up to R150,000

Each category focuses on projects that showcase Gauteng’s rich culture, tell authentic South African stories, and demonstrate innovation, creativity, and professional execution.

Beyond Production: Expanding the Industry’s Reach

The GFC is not just about films—it’s about building sustainable creative ecosystems. That’s why funding also extends to:

  • Audience Development (festivals, community screenings, and outreach programmes)
    • Up to R180,000 for major festivals
  • Enterprise Development (support for production companies and creatives to grow their operations)
    • Opportunities in Animation & VFX, Virtual Reality, and Drone Packages
  • Film Festival Attendance (local and international representation)

Up to R20,000 for local and R50,000 for international festivals

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to registered South African companies operating in the audiovisual sector. The GFC encourages submissions from women, youth, and persons with disabilities, aligning with the province’s goal of an inclusive, transformed creative economy.

Applicants will need to submit:

  • A detailed project proposal and implementation plan
  • Company documents (CSD report, BBBEE certificate, tax clearance, etc.)
  • Proof of experience, budget breakdown, and letters of intent where applicable

Application Details

The call for submissions is open for 7 to 14 working days. All applications must be submitted via the GFC Grant Platform System.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered, so filmmakers are urged to prepare early.

Successful applicants will sign contracts with the GFC, and all funded projects are expected to submit their final deliverables by March 2026.
