From the vibrant yet challenging streets of Ratanda, Heidelberg, emerges a voice that resonates deeply within South African music. Tumelo Joseph Tshabalala, professionally known as JTTHEVOICE, is not just a musician but a multifaceted artist, entrepreneur, and community builder. His journey from local performances to captivating audiences of 95,000 at FNB Stadium exemplifies his relentless spirit, deeply connected to his roots and a grand vision for the future of South African music. Growing up in Ratanda presented its challenges, but JTTHEVOICE views these hardships as the foundation of his artistic journey. His transition from church choirs and boy bands to launching his solo career in 2012 was driven by a powerful realization: “I had an individual story that only I could tell and share.” This understanding propelled him to carve out his unique sound, drawing inspiration from legends such as Woza Africa, Mxo, Ringo, Thandiswa Mazwai, and international icons like D’Angelo and Usher. JTTHEVOICE’s debut album, THOPI, is a deeply personal tribute to his late mother. With producer Nkosinathi Makabeni, he crafted an emotional and heartfelt project, reflecting his dedication to family and artistry.
His journey has seen him perform on grand stages, including the unforgettable experience of performing at FNB Stadium for 95,000 people. Yet, it is the intimate “Ratanda Wakanda” event in his hometown that remains closest to his heart. This annual celebration fosters inclusivity and authentic artistic expression beyond mainstream popularity. JTTHEVOICE believes in music’s power to connect with audiences on an emotional level. “I will never be a star to people who are searching for something meaningful from me,” he humbly acknowledges. His upcoming dance EP, Nima2, named after his daughter, will explore fatherhood, love, and his lifestyle, offering a fresh yet deeply personal musical journey.
Beyond music, JTTHEVOICE is a thriving entrepreneur, founding Nexdor Holdings PTY (Ltd). As an independent artist, he has mastered multiple roles, from event management to brand development. Passionate about mentorship, he provides vocal training and music business seminars, ensuring that upcoming artists do not struggle as he once did. His advice to artists? “Exploit, misuse, and abuse the Internet—use it to build your career!”
Graduating from the Music Business Lab (MBL) in 2024 was a pivotal moment for JTTHEVOICE. The program expanded his understanding of financial strategy, effective pitching, and business diversification. With this knowledge, he has set an ambitious goal: “I have given myself five years to turn over 5 to 10 million using these skills.” JTTHEVOICE envisions himself serving on the SAMRO board while expanding “Ratanda Wakanda & Abantu Bonke Festival” into a premier annual event. His ultimate goal? To leave a legacy where music serves as both personal joy and shared happiness
