The City of Joburg’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Directorate, in partnership with The Arts Company Soweto (TACS), is set to launch an exciting Visual Art, Printmaking & Market Access Workshop in May and June 2025. This career-defining opportunity is designed to equip emerging artists with the essential skills, knowledge, and market access needed to thrive in the contemporary art scene.
With Johannesburg being a melting pot of artistic expression and cultural innovation, this initiative couldn’t come at a better time. Visual artists, particularly those still finding their footing, often struggle with gaining exposure, pricing their work, and navigating the competitive gallery landscape. This five-week-long program is a direct response to these challenges, offering a holistic approach to professional development in the arts.
Bridging Creativity & Business Acumen
While talent and passion drive artists, understanding the business of art is crucial for longevity and success. The COJ x TACS Printmaking Workshop focuses on both creative and entrepreneurial growth, ensuring that participants not only master their craft but also gain the confidence to curate, price, and market their work effectively.
The workshop will feature:
✅ Hands-on Printmaking Training – Artists will explore various printmaking techniques, from linocut to screen printing, under expert guidance.
✅ Interactive Coaching & Theory Sessions – Participants will learn the fundamentals of curation, pricing strategies, and gallery presentation.
✅ Concept Development & Research – Theoretical sessions will help artists refine their vision, develop meaningful concepts, and articulate their creative process.
✅ Industry Talks & Mentorship – A lineup of experienced industry professionals, gallerists, and curators will provide insights on navigating the art world.
✅ Exclusive Exhibition Opportunity – The program will culminate in a high-profile print exhibition on June 16, 2025, offering a platform for artists to showcase their work to collectors, gallery owners, and the broader public.
Shaping the Next Generation of Artists
Johannesburg has long been a hub for artistic talent and cultural innovation. However, many young and emerging artists struggle with sustainability and market access. Through this initiative, COJ and TACS are creating a pipeline for artists to move beyond informal spaces and into professional galleries and collections.
“This program is not just about technique; it’s about empowerment,” says a spokesperson from The Arts Company Soweto. “We want to equip artists with the tools to take ownership of their careers, confidently engage with the industry, and turn their passion into a sustainable livelihood.”
