Laurian Nortje: A Journey of Resilience, Faith, and Purpose

In her own words, Laurian Nortje opens up about her incredible journey, from a teenager navigating a tough upbringing to becoming a prominent television presenter, producer, voice-over artist, and MC. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and finding purpose in the midst of challenges. As a teenager, I was always active in cultural activities at school and in my community, especially in spaces like the church. Drama, politics, international affairs, and leadership were my outlets, and they shaped the person I was becoming. I grew up in a family where divorce had taken place, and it greatly affected me. My community in Cape Town, like many others, was rebuilding itself from the shadows of apartheid, grappling with poverty, gangsterism, and substance abuse. Despite the brokenness around me, my parents did their best to provide for me. My solace came from my relationship with Jesus and focusing on my budding talents.

I loved volunteering as a teenager, especially at church. In Grade 11, I wrote and performed a play during an evening service. The congregation loved it, and afterward, a lady approached me and introduced herself as a television writer and producer. She asked for my number, saying she’d contact me for future shows. I was over the moon!

She called me to join a traveling show in South Africa, but I was in matric and chose to focus on my academics. A year later, she called again, asking me to audition for a new live youth show called Hectic Nine 9. That’s how it all started. This is why I always tell young people to give their best in every opportunity—even when volunteering. You never know who’s watching or what door might open.

I’ve interviewed top celebrities like Rihanna and Morgan Freeman and travelled across the country meeting inspiring young people. Being SAFTA-nominated as one of South Africa’s best presenters was an incredible honour. But what stands out most is the person I’ve become through this journey. The lessons I’ve learned have shaped my character, and for that, I’m truly grateful.
