The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), under the leadership of the Minister, is inviting nominations for passionate individuals to join the esteemed Council of the Market Theatre Foundation in Johannesburg. This distinguished opportunity offers a chance to make a significant contribution to the rich tapestry of South Africa’s cultural scene.
The Market Theatre Foundation
The Market Theatre Foundation, established in Johannesburg, Gauteng, is a cornerstone of the nation’s performing arts landscape. Renowned for its commitment to fostering innovation and social commentary through theatrical productions, the Foundation plays a vital role in nurturing artistic talent and engaging audiences with thought-provoking performances. The Council plays a critical leadership role in guiding the Foundation’s strategic direction, ensuring its financial stability, and upholding its artistic integrity.
Qualified Candidates
The ideal candidate for the Council possesses a strong background and demonstrable experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Performing Arts: A deep understanding of the South African performing arts scene, with a potential specialization in areas such as theatre production, directing, or acting, would be highly valued.
- Management: Proven leadership skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to oversee effective organizational operations are essential.
- Finance: Expertise in financial management, budgeting, and fundraising is crucial for ensuring the Foundation’s long-term financial health.
- Law: A legal background can provide valuable guidance on governance issues and ensure the Foundation adheres to all relevant regulations.
- Marketing and Public Relations: Experience in crafting a compelling brand image and fostering strong relationships with audiences and stakeholders is beneficial.
- Fundraising: The ability to secure funding through grants, sponsorships, and individual donations is critical for supporting the Foundation’s artistic endeavors.
- Education and Cultural/Social Research: Understanding the role of theatre in education and its ability to address social and cultural issues is a valuable asset.
- Corporate Governance: A strong commitment to ethical practices and good governance principles is essential for ensuring the Foundation’s transparency and accountability.
In addition to their professional expertise, a dedication to community service is a key quality sought in potential Council members.
Compensation and Benefits
Council members will receive compensation in accordance with National Treasury guidelines as outlined in the Cultural Institutions Act.
Nomination Process
To nominate a qualified candidate for the Council, please submit the following documents by December 21, 2024:
- A nomination letter detailing the nominee’s full name, contact information, and a compelling explanation of why they are a strong candidate for the Council.
- An updated curriculum vitae (CV) for the nominee, including contact details for three references who can speak to their qualifications.
- A signed statement from the nominee expressing their acceptance of the nomination and outlining their specific skills and experience that would benefit the Council.
- Certified copies of the nominee’s relevant qualifications and identification document.

Selection Process
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. If you do not receive notification within three months of the closing date, please consider your nomination unsuccessful. The DSAC will conduct thorough suitability and background checks on all recommended candidates before final appointments are made.


Im disappointed by the Service we get from Department of Sports,Arts and Culture Ekurhuleni. Since 2014 till now. And our voice as Journalist is not heard. I would like to nominate Brain Mazibuko from Vosloorus. He is the community developer in Music and Theather. He has more than 30 years in this industry. We don’t want to see same faces that run corrupt forums in Ekurhuleni. We want to nominate people who are going to deliver the vision to the community. Let’s Stop Nepotism in our workspaces.
