Sandton, October 29, 2024 – The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) convened a pivotal gathering at The Capital Empire in Sandton to unveil its Community Media Sustainability Report. This landmark event marked a critical step towards addressing the challenges and unlocking the potential of South Africa’s community media sector. The event, led by Program Director Simon Ntsele of Maputaland Radio, brought together a diverse array of experts, advocates, and stakeholders. MDDA CEO Shoeshoe Qhu set the tone, emphasizing the report’s objective: to empower community media to thrive in the face of financial and infrastructural hurdles. A panel discussion delved into the pressing issue of media freedom in South Africa. Panelists Aldrin Sampear (Newzroom Afrika) and SANEF Chairperson Sonwabisa Makunga engaged in a robust dialogue on information credibility, data verification, and the protection of journalists. Makunga highlighted SANEF’s commitment to establishing a journalist protection fund and advocated for comprehensive support systems for those working in high-risk environments. MDDA Board Chairperson Prof. hlengani Mathebula delivered a keynote address, underscoring the importance of diverse voices in media. He outlined the MDDA’s multifaceted approach to realizing the “sustainability dream” for community media. The subsequent launch of the report by MDDA Acting Executive Manager Lethabo Dibetso highlighted key findings, including the need for financial independence, digital adaptation, and supportive policy interventions.
