Sci-Bono Discovery Centre Hosts Freedom Day Youth Celebration for Creative Industries

On April 26th, 2024, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown Johannesburg, South Africa, held a special Freedom Day Youth Celebration focused on the creative industries. The event, moderated by Sandile Hlayisi, a director of Youth for Human Rights Africa., aimed to empower young creatives by providing them with insights and opportunities for collaboration on a global scale.

Opening Remarks and Sci-Bono Introduction

Professor Mfanelo Ntsobi, CEO of Sci-Bono, welcomed attendees and provided an overview of the Discovery Centre’s mission. He highlighted its role in supporting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and fostering South Africa’s future workforce. Ntsobi also mentioned the various programs offered to young people, including a drone academy, exhibitions, career expos, and holiday programs.

International Collaboration Opportunities

The event featured presentations from international guests exploring collaboration possibilities between South Africa and other countries. Anastasia Dubrovskaia, Project Director of the Office of International relations of the Agency for strategic initiatives. Spoke about co-production of creative content, development of creative clusters, and multidisciplinary art forms. She emphasized educational programs offered by Russia and collaboration in creative industries.

India-South Africa Collaboration and Industry Trends

Mr. Harish Kumar, Head of Chancery and Commercial at the Indian Consulate, discussed potential collaborations between India and South Africa’s creative sectors. Adelaide Joshua-Hills, Head of Creative & Sales at Urban Brew Studios, followed by addressing how the film industry has evolved and the need for continuous adaptation. She highlighted opportunities for youth in production, script development, and overcoming funding challenges. Joshua-Hills emphasized collaboration and storytelling that reflects African experiences.

Monetization, Franchising, and Entering the Industry

The conversation shifted to artist monetization and compliance with Jackie Mpondo-Hendricks, Founder and Chief Social Entrepreneur of Business Pledge Collaborators. David Haines he is a Hollywood actor, Producer and Director, who worked well with Will Smith, shared his experience of starting in the industry. He stressed the importance of hard work, asking questions, researching, and being respectful to build a successful career.

Support for Young Entrepreneurs

Representatives from the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) explained their organization’s role in promoting a business-friendly environment for entrepreneurs. They detailed various programs offered, including skills development, mentorship, legal and marketing support, and access to funding opportunities. Additionally, Mr. Thuto Mkhize, a franchising specialist, presented on building a brand for franchising and the legalities involved.

Celebrating Young Talent

The event concluded with a live performance by the a cappella group Ivory Park Male Voices and a fashion show showcasing retro-inspired designs by KANA. Pat Mahlangu, CEO of Pat on Brands & Lerato Agency, highlighted their Youth Owned Brand Awards, recognizing and promoting young entrepreneurs within the creative industries.

The Freedom Day Youth Celebration at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre provided valuable insights and connections for aspiring creatives in South Africa. The event offered a glimpse into potential international collaborations, industry trends, and resources available to support young entrepreneurs in the creative field.
