It’s not the wonders of the world that make a place; it’s the people.” These powerful words from Dr. Msizi Myeza, CEO of the Council for the Built Environment, set the tone for an opportunity that places inclusivity at the heart of South African storytelling.
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has announced an open call for people with disabilities to submit proposals for short films under the theme “Fully Inclusive.” This initiative aims to amplify voices that have often been sidelined, creating space for stories that reflect lived experiences of disability in South Africa.
What’s on Offer
The NFVF will award funding to four projects:
- Two stand-alone short fiction films
- Two stand-alone documentary films
Each selected project will receive up to R250 000 to produce a short film between 5–10 minutes in length. Proposals should present bold, captivating ideas that inform, educate, and entertain while shining a light on the realities of disability.
Why It Matters
In South Africa, people with disabilities continue to face daily barriers—from inaccessible transport and limited services to financial strain and employment bias. These challenges don’t just affect individuals; they shape how society functions. By bringing these stories to the screen, this initiative envisions a world where design, planning, and storytelling include everyone.
The call also aligns with National Disability Rights Awareness Month (3 November – 3 December), with 3 December marked globally as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It’s a timely reminder that inclusion must move beyond words into action.

This opportunity is open to South African citizens and permanent residents with disabilities. Applicants may apply as individuals or production companies, provided they meet NFVF’s eligibility requirements.
