Comics Do It Best: A Night That Made South African Comedy History

There are nights that make history — and then there are nights that make history while making us laugh so hard we cry. The 12th Annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards was one of those nights. Held at the legendary Lyric Theatre, this wasn’t just a gathering of funny people — it was a celebration of South African comedy’s wild, wonderful journey, and a glimpse into its unstoppable future.

Twelve years ago, the Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards was born out of a simple idea: to celebrate the comedians who make us laugh through life’s toughest moments — those brave voices who tell our stories, poke fun at our flaws, and turn everyday chaos into comedy gold. What started as a bold little awards show has become the biggest night in South African comedy, with its iconic golden Waldo trophy a badge of honour for local comedians. Every year, it reminds us just how far we’ve come as a comedy nation — and just how bright the future is.

This year’s show felt electric. Hosted by the unbeatable pair of Nina Hastie and Carvin H Goldstone, the night kicked off with sass, sparkle, and a sprinkle of good-natured chaos. From Nina’s cheeky wardrobe roasts to Carvin’s dramatic suit reveal, you could feel something special was happening. Then came a moment that rewrote the comedy rulebook: a parody of the R&B hit “Cherry Eyi’ One”, turned into a hilarious tribute to Mrs. Ball’s Chutney, led by the brilliant Vafa Naraghi and friends. A performance only South Africa could pull off — spicy, silly, and entirely original.

KG Mokgadi turned current events into pure comedy, reminding us why satire remains one of our sharpest tools. His fearless take on politics and headlines had the audience howling. And when Mashabela Galane delivered a pitch-perfect five-minute set before presenting the Joe Mafela Award, the audience was reminded why he’s considered a national treasure — blending humour and heart with effortless ease.

The renaming of the Newcomer Award to The Eb Award in memory of Ebenhaezer Dibakwane brought a tearful standing ovation. A fitting tribute to a comedian gone too soon, but never forgotten — a symbol of how this community honours its own.

The night also highlighted the unwavering support behind the comedy industry. Long-time presenting partner Savanna Premium Cider once again reaffirmed its commitment to local comedy. “Twelve years of backing the boldest punchlines in the land – and we’re still laughing (and crying… from laughing),” says Kayla Hendricks, Marketing Communication Manager – Savanna Premium Cider. More than just a sponsor, Savanna has helped grow the industry, shape careers, and back bold new talent, alongside partners Mrs. Ball’s, One-eyed Jack, and Comedy Central.

Beyond the glitz and gags, these awards were a reminder that comedy is one of South Africa’s greatest cultural weapons — a unifying, healing, and wildly entertaining force. With the awards helping comedians launch careers, sell out shows, and gain international recognition, this night wasn’t just about trophies — it was about building a future where South African humour can shine on the world stage.

If you missed the live laughs, don’t worry — the official show special airs on Comedy Central on 26 & 31 May at 9pm. For behind-the-scenes moments and comedy gold, follow #SavannaCCA or visit www.comicschoice.com.
