The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) is thrilled to announce the opening of the 2024/25 call for Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP5) heritage funding applications. This initiative, under the guidance of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), provides a transformative platform to revitalize South Africa’s heritage while creating meaningful job opportunities for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
Why PESP5 Funding Matters
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the heritage sector, leaving many communities and practitioners struggling to sustain their work. PESP5 funding steps in to bridge the gap by empowering communities to preserve, celebrate, and document South Africa’s rich cultural diversity, while simultaneously fostering employment growth.
Funding Categories
Community-based heritage projects that align with the following categories are invited to apply:
Living Heritage: Projects that protect and promote oral traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, and intangible cultural expressions.
Cultural and Natural Heritage: Initiatives that celebrate South Africa’s diverse cultural and environmental heritage.
Education and Training: Programs focusing on research, skills development, and knowledge sharing in the heritage sector.
Note: PESP5 funding does not cover infrastructure or capital expenditure projects.

Imbizo Magazine: Connecting Cultures, Building Futures.
Good evening. Thanks for your progressive information. I appreciate an endeavour done by Imbizo Magazine for putting forward, by keeping creative sector and the communities at large informed about opportunities presented on its social media platform it makes a great change. However, I am bit concerned about the closing date for NHC PESP5 funding application time frame. It is very short, as many people just returned from festive seasons and need to adjust and prepare their documents. Seven days or a week is not enough. At least if the department could allow an application process to go for two to three weeks. To accommodate other struggling art practitioners and afford them an opportunity to apply for their heritage aligned community projects.
Hi, Albert the call out of this funding was made on the 29th November 2024 so i am not sure if they will be able to extend it. but you can engage them on this email address pespfunding@nhc.org.za
