Mpume Mabuza’s journey is a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passion while embracing diverse experiences. As CEO of Downtown Music Hub, she is not only preserving a rich musical legacy but also shaping the future of this dynamic sector. Mabuza’s love for music was nurtured from childhood. She excelled at piano during her high school years and seriously considered pursuing music at university level. However, life took her on a different path initially. After earning a BCom and an MBA, she embarked on a successful two-decade career in financial services, manufacturing, and tourism. This period, while seemingly distant from the world of music, equipped her with invaluable skills in leadership, strategic planning, and financial management – skills that would later prove crucial in her role at Downtown Music Hub.
Despite her corporate success, music remained a constant presence in Mabuza’s life. A pivotal moment came during her time as an executive at uShaka Marine World, where she was responsible for events, entertainment, and marketing. This role reconnected her with the vibrancy of the music scene, as she secured major partnerships with brands like Coca-Cola, SABC, and MTV/Viacom, and hosted iconic events like Dubane Spring Break and the Bob Marley Festival.
Mabuza’s formal entry into the music industry came in 2020 when she was appointed CEO of Downtown Music Hub. This transition coincided with the challenges of the pandemic, but Mabuza saw it as an opportunity for growth and innovation. Recognizing the need to deepen her understanding of the industry’s nuances, she pursued further studies at the Wits School of Arts, engaging in international knowledge exchange programmes that connected her with music scholars in countries like Mozambique, India, and Brazil.
As CEO, Mabuza has made remarkable strides in transforming Downtown Music Hub into a dynamic cultural destination. Under her leadership, the Hub received a Blue Plaque from the City of Johannesburg, recognizing its invaluable contribution to the city’s cultural heritage. She has also spearheaded innovative initiatives such as the Music Business Incubator, providing essential skills and opportunities to emerging artists and industry professionals, resulting in the creation of hundreds of new jobs. One of Mabuza’s key leadership principles is the cultivation of a positive and supportive work culture. She believes that “Culture eats strategy for lunch,” emphasizing the importance of a values-driven environment that fosters collaboration, motivation, and a shared vision.
