Johannesburg, South Africa – The iconic Constitution Hill has once again set the stage for South Africa’s future music moguls. The Music Business Lab (MBL) Bootcamp 2024 has become a transformative experience, offering aspiring music entrepreneurs a roadmap to success in the music industry. This year’s edition, packed with insights from industry leaders, is cementing its legacy as a breeding ground for innovative minds ready to disrupt the music business. Over the course of a month, the MBL Bootcamp covered every angle of the music business, providing participants with the tools and knowledge to not only survive but thrive in this competitive landscape. From mastering digital platforms to understanding complex licensing deals, the bootcamp was all about giving the next generation the strategic edge they need. The first week kicked off with Wendy V Bekker from Ditto, who unlocked the potential of DSPs (Digital Service Providers), showing participants how to navigate and optimize streaming platforms for maximum revenue. Karabo Senna representing SAMRO followed, offering a deep dive into the world of CMOs (Collective Management Organizations), sync deals, and music scoring for film and TV, adding valuable tools to the participants’ business arsenal. Wrapping up the week, Mzwandile Sibanda shared key strategies in A&R (Artist & Repertoire), emphasizing how to scout, develop, and manage emerging talent.
Week two took participants into the intricate world of music licensing and publishing, essential for any music entrepreneur. Mpumi Phillips led sessions on music and sync licensing, highlighting the importance of securing deals and protecting their work. A key session came from Tumi Mogapi, Head of Publishing at Africori Music & Vice-Chair of Development & Partnerships at Women in Music South Africa, who gave an in-depth masterclass on music publishing. Tumi broke down the complexities of artist rights management, securing publishing deals, and maximizing royalties, ensuring that participants understood how to build sustainable income streams. Adding a critical legal perspective to the week, Manaileng Maphike, Founder and Managing Director of Maphike Attorneys Inc, shared her expertise as an Entertainment Lawyer. She equipped the participants with knowledge about music business law, including the nuances of contracts, copyright compliance, and legal strategies to protect their music. Maphike’s session ensured that participants walked away with the tools to confidently navigate the legalities of the industry, avoiding common pitfalls and ensuring the protection of their creative work.
