The African music industry is poised for a significant leap forward. On June 21st, 2024, the MBL Music Publishing Course (MBL) celebrated the graduation of its inaugural cohort at the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) building in Johannesburg. This momentous occasion marks the culmination of intensive training for 30 passionate individuals who are now equipped to make impactful contributions to the music publishing landscape. MBL recognizes the critical need for enhanced access to knowledge and resources within the African music industry. Operating under a unique dual model, MBL fosters innovation through its Incubator program, which empowers emerging music businesses. Complementary to this, The Academy provides targeted professional development courses for established industry professionals. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded educational experience that equips participants with the tools they need to succeed. MBL’s 2023 pilot program proved to be a resounding success. Following a rigorous selection process, 11 high-potential music entrepreneurs embarked on a transformative journey at Johannesburg’s Constitution Hill. Through a series of workshops and master classes delivered by industry leaders, MBL equipped these individuals with the necessary skills and strategies to launch their own music businesses.

The program culminated in a graduation ceremony celebrating the birth of 11 diverse and innovative music ventures. This included artist management agencies, record labels, a wellness initiative for artists, and a pan-African booking agency. These new businesses are already actively collaborating, contributing to the overall strength of the music industry ecosystem. Building upon this success, MBL’s 2024 program has expanded to offer a comprehensive 3-month intensive course for Gauteng-based music entrepreneurs. Participants receive invaluable mentorship and master classes from industry leaders, culminating in a pitch opportunity to a panel of investors.

The MBL graduates have transitioned from enthusiastic learners to full-fledged industry professionals. The meticulously crafted curriculum provided a deep dive into the complexities of music publishing, including copyright intricacies, royalty management, and contract negotiation. This transformative journey has instilled in them the knowledge and confidence to navigate the industry’s challenges and make a meaningful difference. MBL’s achievements are the result of strong partnerships. The program would not be possible without the fruitful collaboration with SAMRO and the unwavering support of the University of Pretoria. The Music Business Lab certificate, accredited by the University of Pretoria, adds significant value and recognition to the graduates’ accomplishments.

The MBL Music Publishing Course is the brainchild of two remarkable women – Ninel Lara Musson and Beth Arendse. Ms. Musson, a seasoned music industry veteran with 15 years of experience, is a trailblazer as one of the few female founders of an independent record label and management agency on the African continent. Her unwavering dedication to the industry’s development continues to inspire. Ms. Arendse, CEO of The South African Creative Industries Incubator (SACII), has been a champion for creative SMMEs for over eight years. SACII provides invaluable support and guidance to budding talents, fostering their creative endeavours.

Together, Ms. Musson and Ms. Arendse have created a program that goes beyond education – it empowers the next generation of music industry leaders. MBL extends its heartfelt gratitude to these pioneering women and their enduring commitment to the industry. The graduates now stand at the threshold of exciting opportunities. Armed with their Music Business Lab certificates, they are well-equipped to make significant contributions to the music publishing landscape. We eagerly anticipate their innovative approaches and fresh perspectives that will redefine the industry. This momentous occasion is a celebration of education, collaboration, and a shared passion for music. We congratulate the MBL Music Publishing Course graduates! Your dedication and hard work have paid off. The future of the African music industry is in good hands with you leading the charge.
