Imbizo Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Nicholen Ngobeni, an artist whose roots in the North West province have profoundly shaped her artistic journey. Nicholen reflects on how the unique environment of Makwassie enhanced her artistry: “My time in Makwassie was pivotal. I learned more about stage ethics and presence, crucial for delivering engaging performances. Joining a debate team boosted my confidence significantly, helping me overcome my stage fright. Despite the fear, performing helped me grow. Getting gigs at a young age fueled my zeal to do more.” Nicholen’s journey saw her moving from Alexandra to the North West and back, a transition that had a significant impact on her: “The transition was challenging. Pursuing my music career was my only focus, even when no one believed in my choice. Staying with my uncle in his cramped bachelor flat, sleeping on the floor, was a sacrifice I willingly made. This journey made me realize my unwavering faith in my voice. Despite the challenges, I still believe the world has yet to hear my story—a beautiful, albeit challenging, journey.” Nicholen’s artistic development was further nurtured by mentorship under Israel Matseke Zulu, also known as Ma Orange.
