On June 1, 2024, Hurricane Lifestyle in Katlehong, Gauteng, became a vibrant epicenter of African pride and unity as it hosted its spectacular Africa Month Celebrations. The day began with a stirring rendition of the South African national anthem, setting a spirited tone that resonated throughout the event. Lucia Mabotja, representing the City of Ekurhuleni’s Museums and Heritage Services, delivered a heartfelt welcome address. Her words underscored the critical role of the arts in preserving our heritage and fostering cultural appreciation. She eloquently highlighted how embracing our roots through artistic expression can strengthen communities and build bridges between diverse cultures.
Following Mabotja’s inspiring speech, Mr. Desmond Mthembu from the “Siza Rethusane” organization took the stage. He passionately explained that this event was part of a broader regional cultural exchange, with Katlehong celebrating the rich tapestry of Swati culture. Mr. Mthembu’s address painted a vivid picture of Africa’s diverse heritage, emphasizing how such tours showcase the myriad cultures across different regions. The celebration in Katlehong was a vibrant display of Swati traditions, featuring art, music, traditional food, fashion, poetry, and even a film screening, offering a comprehensive experience of Swati cultural richness.
The atmosphere electrified with the dynamic performance of the Okunye Swati dancers. These young girls captivated the audience with their traditional dance and song, embodying the spirit and vibrancy of Swati culture. The MC passionately called for support of African culture and urged the celebration of the youth who carry their heritage with pride. One of the event’s standout moments was the mesmerizing performance by the poet Jozi Bush. His piece “Joli Nkomo” moved the audience profoundly, with his exploration of identity in isiXhosa resonating deeply. The crowd joined in song, reflecting on his profound questions about self-awareness and the essence of being human.
The celebration’s momentum continued with Swati poet and storyteller, Teddy. Dressed in traditional attire, he shared rich insights into Swati heritage, bringing the culture to life with his enthralling storytelling.
Fashion also took the spotlight with a presentation by Zinhle from Zyle Clothing Brand. Her narration illuminated the significance of both traditional and contemporary African fashion, showcasing an array of stunning crafts, jewellery, and accessories, blending heritage with modernity.
