National Arts Council Announces 2024 Funding Recipients; Artists Respond with Mixed Emotions

The National Arts Council (NAC) of South Africa has announced the recipients of its 2024 Annual Project Funding Call. The announcement, met with both congratulations and concerns from the artistic community, highlights ongoing discussions about funding allocation and communication. While celebrating the success of funded projects, some artists expressed confusion regarding the awarded grant amounts. The NAC distributed a total of R26 million, with no project receiving the advertised maximum of R350,000. This has led to questions about the alignment between application guidelines and funding decisions.

A separate concern involves communication with applicants.  Artists highlighted a lack of clarity surrounding the status of applications marked as “under review” and the absence of feedback for unsuccessful applicants. Many comments acknowledged the complex task faced by the NAC in selecting recipients from a likely pool of high-quality proposals, given the budgetary limitations.

The NAC has indicated that unsuccessful applicants can expect formal decline letters this week. Moving forward, fostering open communication with artists regarding funding criteria, allocation processes, and application feedback mechanisms would be a valuable step for the NAC. Additionally, exploring avenues to expand funding opportunities through partnerships and sponsorships could further support South Africa’s vibrant artistic landscape. However, one lingering question remains: Is the National Arts Council’s funding budget simply not enough to meet the needs of the country’s vast and talented artistic community? This is a critical question that both the NAC and stakeholders within the arts sector will need to grapple with in order to ensure a thriving future for South African arts.

  1. I’m RannyT the musician “Ongabengi uyaloya hit maker” from Maboneng, Johannesburg. I have registered record label named Sugarbae Entertainment Production in Maboneng working with other local artists and dancers in Joburg.

But we struggled a lot because of lack of financial support to market our music and buy facilities like sound systems and quality studio equipment to improve our stand and quality.

Most of our local artist and dancers are unemployed. By getting your full support of funding that will change a lot of people’s life in music industry in area of Gauteng.

We hoping our request will highly considered and be your favorable.

  2. I want to say that am really disturbed by the manner NAC is acting like the private sector which doesn’t have constitutional mandate to the development of artists, yet it is tasked to disburse public funds on behalf of DSAC. Their message of declining applications is one and the same for all the artists. I’ve been applying ever since, also i make sure that i provide all the required supporting documents.
What makes me believe this agency is somehow politicized, is the fact when i apply to National Lotteries, i’ve never inna single day encountered problems of decline such as onse from NAC.
