Building a Stronger Township Economy

On Tuesday, December 12th, 2023, the Nafcoc Ekurhuleni Business Round-Table  ĒXPÒ2024 NEBRTE program brought together entrepreneurs and representatives from various organizations at Tobs Wrap in Vosloorus. The event, focused on the crucial topic of the Township Economy Act, provided a platform for discussion, collaboration, and the sharing of valuable insights.

Opening the Dialogue: Unity and Organization

The Chairperson of Nafcoc Ekurhuleni, Mr. Ratswana, and Secretary, Ma Mimie, warmly welcomed guests to a gathering fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas. Representatives from esteemed organizations, including The Nafcoc Ekurhuleni Executives, United Soweto Business Alliance (USBA), Township Economic Commission of South Africa (TECSA), and Black Business Council, were introduced. This diverse representation set the stage for a fruitful and engaging discussion, promising a rich tapestry of perspectives and contributions.

Keynote Addresses: Driving Change and Growth

The first keynote address

was delivered by Mr. Richard Zulu, who emphasized the importance of unity and organization in fostering a thriving township economy. He highlighted the need to leverage existing structures and resources to support entrepreneurs and hold the government accountable for the implementation of the Township Economy Act.

Mr. Zulu stressed the need for regulation in the retail sector, drawing inspiration from the success of Somali communities united in the spaza shop industry. He also announced Nafcoc’s upcoming 60th anniversary celebrations in 2024, alongside plans for workshops and summits to renew the organizational structure and develop new strategies for the future.

Building Eco-Systems for Township Businesses

Tsietsi Ngobese, founder and CEO of Wesolve4x Consultancy (Pty) Ltd, presented the second keynote address. He focused on the potential of eco-systems to elevate township businesses. He introduced the innovative concept of “pay now, get later” services, which leverage the familiar framework of stokvels to boost sales and support local businesses.

Collaboration and Support: Building a Brighter Future

Representatives from various sectors, including poultry farming, restaurants & catering, ICT, retail, media, arts, manufacturing, and fashion, participated in the event. This diverse group actively engaged in networking and knowledge sharing, fostering collaboration and exploring potential partnerships.

Government Support and Initiatives

Mpho Ntshe, representing EKurhuleni Economic Development, highlighted the department’s efforts in assisting entrepreneurs with business compliance through roadshows and workshops. She emphasized the focus on the spaza shop sector, with resources and funds available to support South Africans in reclaiming ownership of the industry. Additionally, Mpho mentioned the ongoing review of the Township Economy Act to ensure its effectiveness in supporting township businesses.

NAFCOC & CHIETA Training Support

NAFCOC, in partnership with CHIETA, announced an upcoming training support program for small business owners. The three-month program will be conducted two days per week, with sessions running from 09:00 to 15:00. Educational background, a certified ID copy, and company registration documentation are required for enrollment.

The event concluded with a powerful message from Nafcoc and other stakeholders. They emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and skills, promoting quality craftsmanship, fostering collaboration, and instilling a sense of national pride and
